Lake hidden beneath a blanket of weeds

WATCHING birds walk on water has become an all too regular sight for Upper Caboolture resident Geoff Clayson. Only the birds aren’t actually walking on water, they’re making their way across a thick blanket of weed covering the lake which backs onto Mr Clayson’s property. Caboolture News first visited Mr Clayson’s property in June 2011 where glimpses of the lake could be seen beneath a sea of two pest weeds: Salvinia and water lettuce. Fast forward 18 months and the weed is still making its presence felt.

Govt targets destructive river weeds

The NSW government is launching an offensive against aquatic weeds that it says are damaging rivers in the Hawkesbury-Nepean region.

“The project will tackle some of the most serious and destructive aquatic weeds in the country, including Salvinia, Water Hyacinth, Alligator weed, Senegal Tea plant and Egeria,” Ms Hodgkinson said in a statement.

Regular boaters on Tri-parish waterways have undoubtably seen or been stopped short by the unruly growth of salvinia and water hyacinths in the area’s freshwater aquatic byways.

Banned aquatic weed ‘Salvinia’ found in Northland

A banned aquatic weed that forms dense mats that can double in size in days and pose a drowning risk has been discovered in two home garden ponds in Northland, prompting a warning from biosecurity experts. Salvinia (Salvinia molesta) was thought to have been officially eradicated from the region, however, Northland Regional Council biosecurity staff have in recent weeks stumbled across the plant in both the Hikurangi area, near Whangarei, and near Okaihau in the Far North District.
